    Description

Yohei Kunugi, respected business leader and head of the Kunugi family, was found dead in his room, leaving his family with only a vague will and a haunting enigma. When Yohei's younger brother also turns up dead, it's obviously a murder plot. But who's behind it? Could it be Yohei's widowed daughter? Or maybe it's his illegitimate daughter, kept hidden in the mansion? There's also the gardener he hired to do his dirty work. The murderer could be his grandson, secretly in love with a maid, or maybe it's another maid jealous of their affair? And just who is the mysterious child wearing the fox mask, known only as Forget-Me-Not?

The card game ????2 ???????? (Unregistered Detective 2: The Devil Lurks in Kunugi Forest) is a remake, not a sequel, to Unregistered Detective. It's inspired by classic Japanese murder mysteries, especially those written by Edogawa Ranpo, but this is not a deduction game. It's an atmospheric game where players take on the roles of detectives, each with their own special ability, who try to influence the story to gain the most victory points.

Each round begins with 3 Character Cards, drawn from the Investigation Deck and placed in an Investigation Lineup. As the round progresses, players draw Character Cards and add them to the Lineup. When a character is drawn, they trigger different actions. The cards in the Lineup also represent resources, which players use to play Event Cards, representing significant events in the case. Some Event Cards require a certain number of character deaths or even the deaths of specific characters. Event Cards grant victory points, resources only available to that player, and helpful actions. When a player draws the Night of Tragedy card, the round ends. If a character has more of their Character Cards in the Lineup than anyone else, they are murdered and no longer active in the game. In the event of a tie, no one dies unless 5 Curse Tokens have built up.

The game begins with only 1 of each character in the deck and 1 Curse Token in the play area, so it's unlikely someone will die in the first round. But additional cards and Curse Tokens are added each round, so further deaths are inevitable. Players play increasingly significant Event Cards, crafting a different version of the story each game. Once a player accumulates 10 victory points or five characters have died, the game ends and the winning detective is decided.
