DescriptionOn May 10, 1940, the German Army Groups A and B began their invasion of Belgium and the Netherlands. The Allies, who determined this to be an offensive based on the Schlieffen Plan, set up as planned a line of defense along the Dyle river in Belgium. However, the German main force, the Army Group A's armored forces, broke through the Ardennes forest, contrary to the Allies' expectations, and advanced behind the Allied forces and advanced quickly in Northern France towards the English Channel.
