The game is played in consecutive rounds. Each player has 4 meeples, representing their apprentices. Each round begins Each round begins by players putting all their meeples on the board to collect resources, one at a time, until they are all placed. At that point all players collect their meeples, the first player marker is passed to next player in clockwise order, and the resource spaces are refilled and prepared for a new round.

Each requested pottery consists of a basic shape and two sets of ingredients, each of which may include different number of colors and patterns or even additional clay blocks for ornamentation. Clay blocks can be collected from different parts of the riverbank, colors and minerals are up for grabs at the market, and artists can be hired to add different ornamentation to the pottery.
