THEME: Cursus Honorum simulates the career paths of Senators during the Roman Republic. Players represent political factions that work to advance their Senators along the cursus honorum (course of offices) by winning elections and governing the Republic. Senators use their office powers to pass laws, lead armies, prosecute rivals, and build their political power base, personal wealth, and public reputation. Senators also serve in governing posts in the provinces, protecting and developing the expanding Republic and building their fame and fortune. Throughout the game all players must cooperate to ensure the public’s satisfaction with the government remains stable and the Republic remains prosperous and secure.

GAMEPLAY: The game progresses through terms (representing years) each played in four phases. In the Province Events phase, each player rolls dice to determine if random calamities occur within the growing Republic, raising Public Unrest and changing conditions on the board. During the Elections & Appointments phase, players bid money to form the best voting coalitions (hand types) in two Poker-style rounds that gain Senators political offices and provincial appointments (and gain their factions influence tokens). The third phase (Governance) is the heart of the game: players take turns performing actions using money, cards, influence, and the powers of their Senators. Governance involves using office powers to reduce unrest, conquer, defend and develop provinces, establish business and religious connections, and recruit new Senators to player factions. The final phase (Income & Advancement) serves to set the stage for the next term: the state and players collect income based on taxes and holdings, legions are maintained or disbanded, Senators vacate their offices and advance up their career path, and victory points are scored by moving influence into dignitas (legacy) spaces. The game ends when a set number of terms has passed, or number of provinces have been conquered, or when one faction has a set number of influence in dignitas. Scoring for final victory is a composite of a faction's dignitas, Senate membership and wealth.
