    The Civil War lasted from 1861 to 1865 and cost the lives of 600,000 Americans; more than in all Americas' other wars combined. Its immediate cause was the decision of several southern states to leave the Union of States. This 'secession' was the result of years of rivalry between north and south and friction between the federal Government and State governments, particularly over the issue of slavery. Some 50,000 books and articles have been written about this epic conflict that re-forged the American nation.
