First Ukrainian Front, having just captured Lvov (Lemberg) continued a series of offensives with the Sandomierz Offensive that gained a massive bridgehead. The Germans counterattacked with two Panzerkorps. This battle included a firefight between German King Tigers and the Soviet’s largest tanks, the JS-2. The other battle was fought near Warsaw where the Soviets gained small footholds across the Vistula and drove north towards the Narew River to cut off German forces and cut rail lines.
