The web is spun out from the base of the large Spider-man figure and is used to encircle and recapture the escaped villains. If a villain can move off the board, he escapes!
One nuanced suggestion (from the rules) is that a two-player game consists of each player playing Spider-Man once, with each getting a chance to play the villains also. The same goes for three player games and for four-player games!
